OUT in the SILENCE

The aim of the OUT IN THE SILENCE Film & Community Engagement Campaign is to expand public awareness about the struggles GLBT people face in rural and small town America and to promote dialogue and action in communities around the country that will help strengthen the struggle for fairness and equality for all.

The campaign is structured around public television broadcast, a discussion guide and action tool-kit, and online networking activities.  The most important aspect of this work involves an extensive community screening and discussion series that will help to break the invisibility, isolation and powerlessness of GLBT people in rural and small town America and bring people together to catalyze new ways of making resources and support available for those interested in working for change in the places where it is needed the most.

In Pennsylvania, where the Campaign is being piloted with the support of a major institutional donor, local and statewide grassroots groups are helping to set up facilitated events in small towns and rural communities that do not have the resources or capacity to organize and host such community-building efforts on their own.  The goal is to raise GLBT visibility in each of the state’s 67 counties and to use such events to engage and encourage local participation in ongoing grassroots work and in important policy debates now on the agenda.

Similar efforts are in-the-works in Iowa,Oregon, and other states, and the foundation is being laid for a national campaign to help strengthen the long-term movement for fairness and equality for all.
